Finishing Well….

Autopilot Off album cover

The typical person goes to work every day because that’s what he did yesterday. Thus begins the mindless activities of the day. We are so busy being busy, there is no time for any thinking. Our days are on autopilot. We can mindlessly drive the same route, do the same routines, without a thought of how to do it. We can go through the motions of our daily work, with our minds  not even  engaged. If the only reason for going to work today, is to go to work and get a paycheck,  you will  probably be no more effective today than you were yesterday. The sad thing is,  many people who have been with a company for five years or more do not have five years’ experience. They have one year’s experience five times and no specific plans for making next year anything but a repeat performance.

“No steam or gas ever drives anything until it is confined. No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunneled. No life ever grows until it is focused, dedicated and disciplined.” Harry Emerson Fosdick.

The choices we make will ultimately determine how successful we are. If I were to ask everyone of you if you would like to succeed at something, if you would like to make a difference in the world around you, you would all answer YES we do want to make a difference. So my question then to you...What are you doing today to move towards that direction???

It is our everyday steps, our everyday actions, our everyday thoughts and plans that propel us into a brighter future, one of hope and excitement, one of fulfilment and a sense of accomplishment.

“The man who succeeds has a program. He fixes his course and adheres to it. He lays his plan and executes them. He goes straight to his goal. He knows where he wants to go and he knows that he’s going to get there. He loves what he’s doing and loves the journey that is taking him to the object of his desire. He is bubbling over with enthusiasm and he is filled with zeal. This is the man who succeeds.” Anonymous

We all know that Market Research is one of the primary elements to starting any business. Market Research is like sticking your toe into a lake before jumping in. It helps you get the feel of the waters.

When you figure out exactly which group of people you want to reach, and what their needs are, you avoid wasting both time and money. Once you know, you can focus and alter your product or services to fit the needs of your target market. Then you will be able to craft your message to reflect your business and services to your customers.

This process does take some time, but if handled well it will save you many headaches in the not so distant future. Market Research does not need to be costly by consulting surveys or focus groups. You can simple begin by asking the right questions to your faithful customers and also yourself.

To determine if the niche is right for you begin by asking these questions:

  • Do I have an identifiable target population with similar interests and needs?
  • Is the market large enough to support my business?
  • Can I tailor my products, services, and business identity to address that market’s particular needs?
  • Is my target market currently underserved?
  • Can I reach my potential customers in a cost-effective manner?

I encourage you to take the time to set the goals and focus of your Marketing Strategy. This can be an overwhelming process for someone just starting out in a business or for the business owner that wants to re-align their business model.

Some might think that the narrowing of their focus or marketing strategy to a defined niche will be cutting into their profit margins and eliminating many potential customers. But the truth is that a well defined niche marketing strategy can become one of the components that will give your business the power and drive that it needs.

Brian Tracy a well known Business Strategist encourages us to define our Goals, Objectives, Strategies, Plan and Actions that we will take because they then give us a greater REO…Return On Energy that you have put into your business. And when your goals (on who you want to reach) or your marketing strategy is defined you have a higher probability for greater success.

Now that you have identified your niche, this will give your business a laser-sharp focus to begin your marketing strategy. The more you specialize, the more your market will see the value of your services because you speak directly to their unique situations. Assuming your niche is large enough, you can do quite well by becoming a provider of products and services that can’t be found anywhere else.
